Taylor Swift Will Rerecord Her First Five Albums Beginning In 2020 - BuzzFeed

In an interview set to air on this week's CBS Sunday Morning, Taylor Swift revealed she intends to rerecord her back catalog of music after her former record label, Big Machine Records (and, therefore, her original master recordings), was sold for $300 million.

When Swift left Big Machine for a new deal with Universal Music Group late last year, she revealed she would personally own the master recordings of the songs she makes going forward, but Big Machine would retain the masters for all her old music.

The label was acquired by celebrity manager Scooter Braun's company, Ithaca Holdings, in June. In a Tumblr post published at the time, Swift called the situation her "worst nightmare".

She accused Braun of "manipulative bullying", referencing her feud with Kim Kardashian West and Braun's client Kanye West as well as the music video for "Famous", which shows a wax figure of her lying naked in bed next to West and which she referred to as "revenge porn".

She also said she had been offered the opportunity to own her master recordings, but only under the condition that she sign a new 10-year contract with Big Machine, essentially meaning she'd "earn back" one old album for every new one she turned in. Swift explained that she chose to prioritise the future of her career over the music she had made in the past, and left the company knowing its CEO, Scott Borchetta, was planning to sell it.

In an interview with Good Morning America on Thursday morning, Swift spoke about her intentions to rerecord her masters, and revealed she'll be able to begin doing so late next year.

"It's something that I'm very excited about doing because my contract says that starting November 2020, so next year, I can record albums one to five all over again," Swift said.

"It's right around the corner. I'm gonna be busy. I'm really excited," she continued.

Fans immediately picked up on the fact that Swift said she can rerecord albums one to five — Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and 1989 — but didn't mention her 2017 album, Reputation. Some believe she has to wait a certain amount of time after the album's release in order to rerecord it.

She also explained that her upcoming album, Lover, which will be released on Friday, is "really special" to her because it's the first one she will personally own.

A representative for Taylor Swift has been contacted for comment about the fate of Reputation.
