Disney Plus at D23 2019: Marvel, Star Wars, and everything we learned - Polygon

Disney’s streaming service, Disney Plus, debuts in just two and a half month. Though Disney’s library of old content is a huge sell — Every animated film in the vault! Every Pixar film! Every Star Wars movie! — the streaming service also boasts original series and movies aimed to compete with Netflix and emerging platforms like HBO Max. On Friday’s Disney Plus Showcase at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, we learned more about previously announced projects, as well as some totally new ones

From nostalgia-filled reimaginings to totally new endeavors, standalone movies to television shows that tie-in with greater cinematic universe, here’s every big announcement from D23’s Disney Plus panel.

A new Lizzie McGuire revival series is happening

“Disney channel has created the currency upon which kids have transacted their lives for generations,” said Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer for Disney Channels Worldwide . It’s no surprise, then, that Disney Plus’ big Disney Channel-related news gushed nostalgia.

The big reveal: A new Lizzie McGuire sequel series is coming to Disney Plus, with the original creator returning. Hilary Duff will reprise her role as Lizzie McGuire. Only now she’s in her 30s, figuring her life out. She works as an apprentice to a decorator, has an apartment in Brooklyn, and a boyfriend who owns a restaurant in Soho.

“Lizzie is also a grownup. She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget. She has her dream job. She has kinda the perfect life right now,” said Hilary Duff, who appeared alongside director Kenny Ortega on the D23 stage. Also returning? Lizzie’s imaginary cartoon self, just as zany and anxious as originally.”

Phineas and Ferb are back for a new movie

We knew a Phineas and Ferb spin-off movie centering on Candane was coming to Disney Plus. But the first footage from Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe showed Candace in space, after being abducted by aliens, and her brothers’ quest to find her and bring her home. There will be new music, but the same wacky characters and shenanigans.

High School Musical: the Musical: the Series is wacky as hell

A first trailer for Disney Plus’ High School Musical-inspired series showed off just how zany the concept is in execution. Taking place at a fictionalized version of the school where High School Musical was shot, the show will be about a group of kids from “real” East High putting on a performance of High School Musical. The series will delve into the backstage drama of putting on a high school theater production. The series will contain lots of old and lots of new.

“Our brilliant songwriters and musicians have reinterpreted those classic songs from High School Musical and seamlessly woven them together with brand new songs,” said Marsh.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will be available at launch on Nov. 12.

Toy Story spinoff Forky Asks a Question is incredibly endearing

The breakout star from Toy Story 4 returns in a series of shorts. Disney presented the first of the series, in which Forky asks “What is Money?” to Hamm, the piggy bank. Hamm finally manages to convey that money is, indeed, a very important thing, to which Forky counters: “Money can not be as good as having wonderful times with friends like you?”

Forky Asks a Question will be available at launch on Nov. 12.

Monsters At Work takes place literally right after Monsters’ Inc.

The light-hearted Monsters’ Inc. spinoff series will feature an all-new character: Tylor (Superstore’s Ben Feldman) an ambitious fresh graduate from Monsters’ University ready to make his way in the Monster world. Unfortunately, he starts Monsters Inc. the very day that the company switches from scream technology to laugh technology. Concept art of the new monsters revealed not only Feldman’s character, but Aisha Tyler’s character Milie.

Marvel’s What If...? trailer has Steve Rogers piloting a mech

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, along with What If...? Marel-storyboard-artist-turned-director Bryan Andrews and head writer A.C. Bradley (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) took the D23 stage to first introduce a trailer for the animated series, which boasts a huge slate of MCU actors exploring stories that would never get told in the main movies or shows. The reel started off with a swirling vortex filled with images of the live-action films, with the Jeffrey Wright’s ominous Watcher narrating about “the prism of endless possibility” and alternate worlds. As the vortex faded, the animated characters appeared in the folds in the reality. We got a glimpse of T’Challa traveling through space in a Guardians-like outfit and Bucky Barnes facing off against zombie Captain America. Super Soldier Peggy Carter’s full costume — featuring a Union Jack — was also revealed. Steve Rogers is still present in the Captain Carter reality, only this version of him pilots a mech, which Captain Carter flies around.

“I am the Watcher, I am your guide through these vast new realities,” says the Watchers as the trailer ends. “Follow me and dare to face the unknown and ponder the question ... What If?

Falcon and the Winter Soldier brings back familiar faces — and introduces new ones

While Feige didn’t offer much news on Loki besides introducing series director Kate Herron (Sex Education) and writer Michael Waldron (Harmonquest), there were a few casting announcements to make for the other announced series. Captain America: The Winter Soldier actress Emily Vancamp returns as SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, while Wyatt Russell makes his MCU debut as John Walker, known to comics fans as U.S. Agent. Both remained tight-lipped on details of their characters.

Feige noted that, while the cast is expanding, the show will focus on Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s core relationship. “We’ll do a much deeper dive on both of their pasts and both of their presents post-Endgame,” said Feige.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be the first new Marvel series to stream on Disney Plus in fall 2020.

WandaVision has the most eclectic MCU cast

The Scarlet Witch and Vision series’ strange juxtaposition of a 1950s sitcom and typical MCU adventure only grew stranger when more of the cast was revealed. In addition to a grown up version of Monica Rambeau played by Dear White People’s Teyonah Parris, Kat Dennings will reprise the role of Darcy Lewis from Thor and Thor 2, with Randall Park playing Agent Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man and the Wasp. Joining as “WandaVision’s nosy neighbor” is Kathryn Hahn, which sounds extremely Bewitched.

A brief teaser to show off “flavor” paired footage of Wanda and Vision from the MCU films with the Dick Van Dyke show, distorted by static, and with an eerie laugh track playing over it.

“I’m sure you have a more clear idea of what the show is,” joked Kevin Feige, at the reveal of the cast and the teaser. The show hasn’t started shooting, but both Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany touted the script.

“It’s so funny, but it ends up being this huge epic adventure,” said Bettany.

WandaVision will premiere on Disney Plus in spring 2021.

disney plus’s marvel lineup Petrana Radulovic

Three new Marvel shows — and three new Marvel heroes joining the MCU — were announced at D23: Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk. Ms. Marvel specifically was confirmed by Feige to eventually make her way from streaming to the films. Moon Knight focuses on a mercenary named Mark Spectre left for dead in Egypt. She-Hulk will be about Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters — who is also a lawyer — in a show “unlike anything we’ve done before.”

Jeff Goldblum and Kristen Bell lead Disney Plus’ reality show charge

A host of non-fiction series and movies will live on Disney Plus, including a competition show about families making meals together and a series about service dogs, all featuring a wide variety of celebrity guests and hosts. In The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Goldblum goes around and tries things in.

“Be warned. I’m in the show a lot,” he quipps in the trailer, where he holds a tattoo pen and looks at some pricey sneakers.

Meanwhile, Kristen Bell executive-produces Encore!, a series about high school theater kids reuniting in their middle-age and putting on one more show.

Both The World According to Jeff Goldblum and Encore! will be available at launch on Nov. 12.

The live-action Lady and the Tramp trailer is ... full of dogs

More nitty, gritty realistic reboots of animated classics are upon us. This one stars dogs! They’re actually dogs. A redone version of Bella Notte plays as the dogs frolicked. Ala the first Lion King trailers, not many of them actually talked. They’re all rescue pooches, though. That’s nice.

Lady and the Tramp will be available at launch on Nov. 12.

Stargirl, Timmy Failure, Togo, and Noelle are brand new Disney movies

The mid-budget, family-friendly Disney film has gone all but extinct in the last 10 years of the blockbuster era, but Disney Plus first original films run the gamut of young adult romance, quirky kid antics, rustic sleddog adventure, and holiday romp.

Only Noelle got a trailer to the public, featuring Anna Kendrick’s cheery title character in search of her brother Nick (Bill Hader), who’s ran off from his Santa duties. Meanwhile, cousin Gabe (Billy Eichner) seeks to pivot the North Pole to online delivery. Noelle will be available at launch on Nov. 12.

Stargirl’s footage revealed a dreamy young adult romance set in the dessert, sticking close to Jerry Spinelli’s original book where an average high school boy Leo meets the quirky Stargirl, who shows him how to be true to himself. Indie musician Grace Vanderwaal stars as Stargirl — and yes, she plays her ukelele in the trailer. Stargirl will be out in early 2020.

Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, the new film from Spotlight director Tom McCarthy, showed off a precocious young boy with an active imagination (and an imaginary polar bear) who grumbles through school. He visits a classmate only to find out that the class hamster has died — so he starts an investigation. Timmy Failure airs in early 2020.

Togo tells the “untold true story set in the winter of 1925 across the treacherous terrain of the Alaskan tundra” and stars tough as nails Willem Dafoe, who in the footage is tasked with training an untrainable pup to turn him into one mighty fine sled dog. The film launches in December.

A new, unscripted, celebrity-filled Muppets show is on the way

Kermit the Frog — along with Joe from legal — announced Disney Plus’ new short-form series, Muppets Now. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reveal much about the show.

“The Muppets are getting together to make an unspecified fun thing, due to certain legal restrictions we can’t share the details of said fun things until a yet to be determined date next year,” said Kermit.

Gina Rodrigeuz’s female president show premieres in January

Diary of a Female President follows a middle-school girl named Elena as she eventually grows up to become President of the United States.

“It’s a story that’s important to be told,” said Rodriguez in a behind-the-scenes clip. The half-hour family comedy boasts a diverse staff in front of and behind the camera.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars gets a Feb. 2020 release date

We’ve known for a while now that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would get one more season, and now that season finally has a date. The hit animated series ended abruptly on its fifth season, right as Ahsoka left the Jedi Order. Though a few post-season 5 episodes were released, fans wanted more closure. Lucasfilm will deliver next year.

Cassian Andor series begins shooting in 2020

The title for this prequel series still wasn’t revealed, but Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk, who play Cassian Andor and droid K-2SO, respectively, riffed about how much younger they’d look (since it is, indeed, a prequel).

“I’m thinking K-2Fast, K-2Furious: A Cassian Andor Story,” said Tudyk about the untitled project.

They also talked about possible emotional moments on set and the relationships between their characters.

“We will have a telenovela moment,” teased Luna.

No release date on this one yet, but shooting is set to begin next year.

The Mandalorian takes place where chaos rules

Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, and Taika Waititi were all on hand for the reveal of the first public trailer for The Mandalorian. The spot showed off the gritty, lawless world and really indulges in the “Space Western” concept. There were Storm Trooper skulls, dusty magnificent landscapes, and a whole lotta laser shooting.

“I pitch[ed] Kathleen Kennedy a version of the show that took place after Return of the Jedi, after the revolution, after everyone is celebrating... where chaos reigns,” said Jon Favreau. “We were able to put together a production that stands side by side with the feature films.”

The Mandalorian will be available at launch on Nov. 21.

Obi-Wan confirmed

At long last — all the secrets and rumors and whispers were revealed to be true. Ewan McGregor is returning to the role of Obi Wan Kenobi for a Disney Plus series.

“Yes,” said McGregor. “I am playing Obi-Wan Kenobi. It feel so nice to say.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the scripts were written and that shooting would begin next year.

A load of Disney Plus technical specs

On top of all the creative announcements, Disney released an info dump on top of the price plans, bundle options, and usable devices. The service will allow for unlimited downloads for offline watching; an ultra-high-definition viewing experience with up to 4K Ultra HD video playback in Dolby Vision ultra-vivid imaging, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos immersive audio on supported devices; profile customizations for seven different profiles and concurrent streaming for up to four registered devices; and English, Spanish, French and Dutch options for the legacy content, with the promise of more languages for Disney Plus originals.
