Spider-Man: Far From Home Has Already Passed A Box Office Milestone - Cinema Blend

Most new movies usually get their official start on Fridays with Thursday night preview screenings, but due in part to the Independence Day holiday, Spider-Man: Far From Home opened on Tuesday. Now, after only a few days in theaters and before the weekend has even started, the Spidey sequel has already swung past an impressive box office milestone.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, crossed the $300 million mark globally over the July 4th holiday, finishing ahead of expectations with $310 million according to The Hollywood Reporter. Far From Home got to that figure thanks to a Fourth of July performance deserving of its very own fireworks celebration.

The strategy to open ahead of Independence Day as opposed to after has paid dividends for the Sony and Marvel Studios picture. The Jon Watts-directed film made $25.2 million on July 4, the second-best any movie has ever done on the holiday, behind only Michael Bay’s 2007 Transformers, which made $29.1 million. That puts Spider-Man: Far From Home’s domestic total at $91.5 million after three days (Tues-Thurs).

Before it reached domestic shores, Spider-Man: Far From Home launched in Japan, China and Hong Kong on June 28 and got off to a fast start with $111 million. Overall, of the film’s $310 million worldwide gross to date, $218.5 has come from overseas. That $111 million in Asia and a sneakily impressive opening night domestically portended good things for the MCU’s latest and, indeed, the weekend is looking promising for Spidey.

Sony is staying conservative with its outlook, predicting a 6-day haul of $125 million for the latest chapter in its lucrative joint venture with Marvel Studios. However, at its current pace, Spider-Man: Far From Home could go much higher and finish out with $175 million domestic over 6 days. That would be at the top end of the earlier tracking that pegged the film to open between $150-$180 million.

Not even factoring in the rest of the international box office over the weekend, $175 million domestic ($83.5 million over what it has already made) would put the film close to the $400 million mark. It has been expected that Far From Home would swing to half a billion dollars by the end of the weekend and it seems to be well on its way to doing that.

Far From Home enters the weekend with the benefit of very positive reviews, seemingly good word of mouth and close proximity to Avengers: Endgame. That all adds up to Marvel’s Phase 3 and the Infinity Saga going out with a profitable bang.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is now playing. If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you know what ticket to buy and come back once you’ve seen it to read how it sets up the future for Tom Holland’s hero. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to see what other movies you can look forward to this summer.
