Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman — say his name five times in a mirror, and he might appear.
Director Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) brings back the iconic horror villain in the upcoming Candyman, from Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. The film’s first trailer heightens the horror and shows what’s happened in the thirty years since the first movie.
The 2020 Candyman will be a direct sequel to the 1992 movie, in the vein of how 2018’s Halloween was a direct sequel to the 1978 slasher — begone, sequels with subtitles like Farewell to the Flesh! The 1992 film followed Helen Lyle, a graduate student investigating an urban legend — only to find herself the target of the mysterious Candyman himself.
Tony Todd, who played Candyman in the original movies, has reportedly returned to the role, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) joining as Anthony McCoy. If you’re not up with your Candyman lore, that’s the baby who was kidnapped in the first movie, except now he’s grown and an artist researching the Candyman legend. Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo also join, with Cassie Kramer playing Helen Lyle.
Candyman hits theaters on June 20, 2020.
