Woah! Did Meghan Markle Leak the Letter She Wrote To Her Father Before He Did? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s lawsuit against a British newspaper might have just backfired in a big way — and it could possibly have major legal ramifications. A recent report claims the Duchess of Sussex may have revealed the contents of her deeply personal letter to her father well before the Mail on Sunday actually published it. If true, this revelation could affect Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday. 

What did Meghan Markle’s letter to her father say?

It all started in February 2019, when the UK-based tabloid, the Mail on Sunday, published a letter that was reportedly written by Markle to her estranged father, Thomas Markle. This was around the time of Meghan Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry.

The letter was a plea from Markle to her father to stop “lying and creating so much pain,” and to stop speaking out about their relationship to the tabloids. In the letter, the duchess implies that her father ignored her direct communications to him and instead, talked to the tabloids, which she says broke her heart. At the conclusion of the lengthy letter, the Duchess of Sussex begs her father to let her and Prince Harry live “in peace.”

Thomas Markle claimed that he released the letter to combat reports that he was the reason that he and his daughter are estranged, and only did it because of some negative news stories that were circulating. Regardless of how or why the letter was leaked, it definitely didn’t bring him and his daughter any closer.

With Meghan Markle being nearly seven months pregnant at the time of the letter being leaked, many reports claimed the duchess was so stressed out that she decided to stop communications with her father entirely.

The backlash surrounding the letter’s release eventually subsided, and for a while, it faded into the background. However, in early October 2019, the news broke the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had decided to take legal action against the Mail on Sunday in response to their publication of the letter this spring.

In the statement released by Prince Harry, he claimed that the incident was only one case of a “long and disturbing pattern of behaviour” by the British media but that he and Markle no longer feel as though they can sit idly by while Markle’s reputation is tarnished. While many royal fans spoke out in support of Markle and Prince Harry’s bold move, there could be some unintended consequences to their lawsuit.

The Mail on Sunday responded immediately to the lawsuit, stating that they completely stand by the story that they published and that they will be “defending this case vigorously.”

While at Victoria Yards in Johannesburg this afternoon, The Duchess of Sussex had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of, and how to enable a ‘wellbeing economy’ thanks to Co-Director of the Maker’s Valley Partnership, Simon Sizwe. Simon was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Young African Leaders Initiative programme initiated by President Obama, and he explained that by investing in the overall well-being of a community and its people, and focusing on that economy, you can enrich everyone for a better quality of life. She also met with the owners of Sobae Frozen, an entrepreneurial duo who created their small business as a solution to food waste, creating vegan sorbet from unused fruit from Victoria Yards. At the end of her visit, The Duchess was moved by the original poetry of Belita Andre, the winner of the Poetry Grandslam. In her reading she said: “The Maker’s Valley is a social and enterprise hub, a wave between my corner of the world and yours. Insisting that beyond the anchors of survival. Only days after the lawsuit was first announced to the public and press, a brand-new story was released that could spell big trouble for Markle and Prince Harry’s lawsuit. Sources claimed that, in fact, Markle violated her own privacy by telling some of her friends about the contents of the letter, after which they spoke out to People magazine in her defense.

Immediately after Markle’s friends gave their People interview this spring, Thomas Markle reportedly released excerpts of the letter that his daughter had written him, in order to defend his own reputation. While legal experts state that this new revelation doesn’t necessarily mean that Markle will lose her lawsuit, it does weaken her case and could mean that she is asked to swear under oath as to whether or not she orchestrated the interview with her friends in order to bolster her own credibility.
