'The Crown' Season 3 Gets Netflix Premiere Date. Who Will Play Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Crown is coming back to Netflix. The streaming service announced Monday that the new season of the Emmy-winning series would premiere in November.

Fans will see some big changes in the third outing of the hit drama, including an all-new cast taking over from Claire Foy, Matt Smith, and Vanessa Kirby, who played Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and Princess Margaret in the first two seasons.

‘The Crown’ premieres November 17

Mark your calendars now. Season 3 of The Crown arrives on Sunday, November 17.

It’s been a long wait for fans of the British period drama, which premiered in the fall of 2016. Season 2 launched on December 8, 2017, which means that there will have been nearly a two-year gap between the second and third seasons.

Season 3 picks up shortly after the end of season 2 in 1964, which concluded with the birth of Prince Edward, Elizabeth and Philip’s youngest child. It will cover events such as the Beatles rise to fame and England’s World Cup win in 1966.

Olivia Colman will play Queen Elizabeth II

For the upcoming season of The Crown, Olivia Colman will take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Foy.

Audiences got a glimpse of Colman as the long-reigning monarch in a brief teaser released by Netflix. She’ll play the queen in both the third and fourth seasons, which will cover the mid-1960s through the early 1980s.

Colman has experience playing royalty. In 2019, she won an Oscar for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite. Earlier this year, she compared her experience portraying the two royal women.

“I find the harder is Queen Elizabeth because everyone knows what she looks like, everyone knows what she sounds like, everyone has an opinion on whether the casting is right,” the actress told the Press Association. “And I am loving the job, I am loving trying to play her, but I find her harder. The difference between the two, playing different people is what I went into this job for, that’s the whole point of being an actor, so I am having a lovely time.”

Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip

Outlander and Game of Thrones alum Tobias Menzies will take over from Matt Smith as Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip in the new season of The Crown

In addition, Helena Bonham Carter will play Elizabeth’s glamorous but troubled younger sister Princess Margaret. Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) will play Lord Mountbatten and Josh O’Connor (The Durrells in Corfu) will portray a young Prince Charles. Marion Bailey is the Queen Mother and Ben Daniels is Princess Margaret’s husband Lord Snowdon.

Emerald Fennell (Call the Midwife) has also joined the cast. She’ll play Camilla Shand, the future Camilla Parker-Bowles and Duchess of Cornwall.

We won’t see Princess Diana just yet

For royal watchers, one of the biggest questions about The Crown was who would land the role of Princess Diana. In April, producers announced that after an extensive search, they had cast Emma Corrin (Pennyworth) as the future wife of Prince Charles.

However, viewers will have to wait a bit to see Corrin’s take on the iconic Princess Di. The character won’t be introduced until the show’s fourth season.

According to reports, Gillian Anderson will also join the cast in season 4. She’ll play British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
