Netflix Announces Scorsese's The Irishman Will Not Be Released in Major Theater Chains - IGN

Netflix has announced that Martin Scorsese's The Irishman will debut in theaters 27 days ahead of its arrival on the streaming service, but not at major chains.Deadline reports that the star-studded mob drama will receive a limited release, starting out in select theaters across Los Angeles and New York on November 1. Additional screens will be added in the United States and the United Kingdom throughout its 27-day theatrical window before launching on Netflix on November 27, the day before Thanksgiving.

Scorsese had reportedly been pushing for a more traditional rollout in theaters, but Netflix allegedly did not want to accept the three-month exclusive window that national theater chains AMC and Cineplex were requesting for this release.

Deadline has since confirmed that The Irishman will not be playing in multiplex screens controlled by those companies, or Regal and Cinemark, due to their opposing distribution terms with the streaming platform.

Still, Netflix has continued to loosen its grip on exclusive-streaming, as this particular release will mark the longest theatrical window of any film the company has ever produced, even beating out Oscar-winner Roma, which received a 21-day exclusive window in small theaters last year.

Variety insiders believe that the upcoming Scorsese-directed film will have a similar theatrical footprint to Roma, which screened in roughly 250 theaters in the US and approximately 1200 venues overseas.

With The Irishman already in talks to be a potential Oscar contender for the upcoming awards season, a theatrical release of some sort must be in place for the big-budget feature to be eligible for an Academy Awards Best Picture nomination.

The Irishman will have its World Premiere as the Opening Night film of the New York Film Festival on September 27.
