'Breaking Bad' movie set for October - Stuff.co.nz

Given El Camino is a sequel to Breaking Bad, it is unlikely Walter will return. Unless it takes a wild left turn into a zombie movie.

Given El Camino is a sequel to Breaking Bad, it is unlikely Walter will return. Unless it takes a wild left turn into a zombie movie.

Nearly six years ago Jesse Pinkman drove off into the sunset in a battered Chevrolet El Camino in what was the closest thing to a happy ending fans of the incredibly popular TV show Breaking Bad could have reasonably expected.

But it seems that wasn't quite the end for the character played by actor Aaron Paul, because we learned a few months back that Pinkman would return in a Breaking Bad movie, and now it has been revealed that it will be released on Netflix this October.

The New York Times has reported that Netflix plans to announce the film, titled El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie on Monday and that it will be centred around Pinkman, with a brief plot premise stating "in the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future."

In an interview Paul revealed that he had been contacted by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan two years ago about the possibility of a movie, saying that at the end of a phone conversation about plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the debut of the series Gilligan "mentioned that he had an idea of where to take it from here, and he wanted to hear my thoughts on it. I quickly told Vince that I would follow him into a fire."

Gilligan, who wrote and directed El Camino, delivered Paul a script that the actor said left him speechless "for a good 30, 60 seconds."

"I was just lost in my thoughts. As the guy who played the guy, I was so happy that Vince wanted to take me on this journey."

While Netflix had done a remarkable job at keeping the existence of the movie secret during its production, a few slips have since happened, with Bob Odenkirk, who played morally flexible lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad as well as the prequel series Better Call Saul, recently letting slip to Hollywood Reporter that the movie was finished.

"I find it hard to believe you don't know it was shot," he said. "They did it. You know what I mean? How is that a secret? But it is. They've done an amazing job of keeping it a secret."

And Netflix itself even had a brief slip up when it accidentally posted a placeholder image on its website revealing the name and brief plot synopsis. The image has since been taken down, but this is the internet so of course someone got a screen grab of it.
