What Are the Odds of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Naming Their Baby Diana? - The Cheat Sheet

The British are all excited about the impending birth of the newest member of the Royal Family. Meghan Markle is due sometime in the spring, but Royal couple hasn’t officially shared anything much narrower than that. Although at the end of January, during a visit to Birkenhead, she told a member of the crowd she was due in April.

Prince Harry has deemed the child “our little bump,” but the bump is getting quite large!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex claim to not know the gender of the child, and maybe they don’t. But then again, maybe they do and are just remaining mum about Baby Sussex. Either way, they must be discussing the potential name for their child, which they are expected to share at the time of his or her birth.

Meghan is officially on Maternity Leave! Meg is over seven months pregnant with her and Prince Harry's first child, but she hasn't stopped her royal duties just yet. After the Duchess of Sussex attended the Commonwealth Day services at Westminster Abbey with the royal family on Monday, we began speculating whether the grand event marked the end of Meghan's public appearances before giving birth, thus starting her maternity leave. However, the answer is a little more complicated than that. It may be a while before we see Meghan in public again, but she's not exactly taking a break from work. "Her public engagements have finished" a Palace aide confirmed. "Meghan will continue working privately behind the scenes, taking meetings," the source added. "She has also been using this period to catch up with those involved in her patronage-related endeavors." As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex prepare for their baby, they're also getting ready to move out of Kensington Palace and into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. However, they have not relocated yet.

A lot! One of England’s new favorite pastime is booking odds of the name for the future heir. Yes, he or she will be an heir to the throne, seventh in line following his or her father Prince Harry. Although you don’t have to be a Brit to wager in. There are online booking sites.

Current odds on Ladbrokes for the gender are even for a boy right now and 8/11 for a girl. Odds for what day of the week Baby Sussex will be born are 5/1 across the board. As for the time of day, well . . . we won’t get into that one. But, they are also showing odds for the possibility of twins at 3/1.

If the baby’s a boy

The public’s favorite boy names include Albert and Philip, each receiving 12/1 odds right now on Ladbrokes. Alfred and James come in 16/1, Alexander has 20/1 odds, and Charles and Edward are lower down at 33/1 odds. The Daily Mail shares Arthur and Edward as favored names for a boy.

Each name considered, son or daughter, will be steeped in British tradition, despite the baby’s mum being an American. No doubt if the baby is a boy, he’ll be welcomed by all of England, but for whatever reason, the country seems to want a baby girl.

A little girl’s name

Odds are, and Brits most likely want a daughter to be named Diana after Harry’s late mother. The current Ladbrokes odds are 6/1. Victoria is running closely behind at 8/1. Other possibilities include Alice at 12/1, Elizabeth and Mary at 16/1, and Alexandra or Grace at 20/1.

The Daily Mail concurs citing another online betting site, William Hill having 10/1 odds for the name Diana. She wouldn’t be the first daughter of this generation of Royals honoring the late Princess. Prince William and Kate Middleton’s daughter Charlotte’s middle name is Diana.

Remembering Princess Diana

The former Princes of Wales was actually no longer a princess when she died following a tragic accident on Aug. 31, 1997. She was only 36, and her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were 15 and 12 (just about to turn 13), respectively. Diana was 12 years younger than Prince Charles.

It was a happy time in Britain when Charles and Diana were married in 1981. But it was a strained marriage from the onset, in part because of the difference in age, and in part, because the Prince remained in love with Camilla Parker Bowles, his second wife. Amid royal scandal, Diana and Charles divorced in 1996.

England continued to love Diana none-the-less and continue to mourn her 21 years following her death. There is little doubt the country would welcome a new Diana, wholeheartedly.

As such, while we’re not in on the betting game, we are going with the odds for the name of Diana for a daughter. If the baby is a boy, our best guestimate is the name of Arthur.
