Coroner: 'Y&R' star Kristoff St. John's cause of death was heart disease; alcohol contributed - USA TODAY

Soap-opera star Kristoff St. John's death was the result of hypertrophic heart disease and an accidental alcohol overdose, according to People and TMZ, citing an autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

USA TODAY has reached out to the coroner's office for comment.

St. John, who spent nearly three decades playing Neil Winters on CBS' "The Young and the Restless," was found dead at his home in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles on Feb. 3.

Hypertrophic heart disease, also known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, refers to a thickening of the heart muscle, which makes it harder for the organ to pump blood to the rest of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition often goes undiagnosed because it has few symptoms, but some patients can experience problems breathing or abnormal heart rhythms known as arrhythmias.
